25 years, i don't know what you're talking about. basically obama was vague last night. but romney came with specifics. jon: cory, you described the debate as being sort of very specific and bordering on wonky but isn't that what people are looking for right now? aren't they looking for specifics and numbers and ideas here? >> i think you're absolutely right about that. always interesting to me tv commentators and others complain how debates and political discourse is boring and turning american people off whether this is exactly the time they should pay close attention. when they do this is when they see the contrast between the two candidates standing on same stage. if you look reports come out this morning, fact checkers, "l.a. times", "wall street journal", "washington post" they're blowing holes in the presentation that governor romney presented last night. saying again, how are you going to pay for deficit reduction? how are you going to pay for the tax cut? how will you create jobs and all of this environment. and still all the things that you want to do. just doesn't add up

back to first year of the obama administration, from an unknown source, if you will, in an early meeting that the president had with jewish leaders, at the white house back in 2009, that the president wanted to spwant ed to put some daylight between the u.s. and israel. he didn't mention israel was thrown under the bus, but he didn't back off at all in his insistence that the u.s./israeli relationship, specifically relationship between the president and the prime minister, was under strain. i will point out this, he's right on that, the relationship between netanyahu and president obama is under strain. but the u.s./israeli military to military relationship, intelligence to intelligence relationship, at least according to ehud barak and shimon peres, i interviewed both of them in july, they insist the relationship has never been better. the personal relationship between these two leaders, though, is not good. >> that is what romney has pointed out. up until now, and perhaps largely because of the operation that killed osama bin laden, it has been advantage obama when it comes to

reaction from the obama administration to the uprising, if you will, in iran, a couple of years ago, when there were protests. people were angry and the u.s. was on the sidelines, the president did not directly speak out and the explanation that the administration at the time gave was that the opposition didn't want this to appear to be the opposition to the ayatollahs, standing up in iran, with the backing of united states. that could have been counterproductive. as a result, the obama administration was pretty silent. at the time now where romney is going after him on that, i think there were a few areas where there were some significant differences, but on the whole, after you get through some of the angry rhetoric, there is a lot of agreement between obama and romney, one area of disagreement on arming the syrian rebels. another area of disagreement, how far will iran be able to go in its nuclear weapons capability, the capability of developing a bomb as opposed to actually having a bomb. and the third was on russia. he twice in a speech singled out vladimir putin as a basically a foe

the surge and now, the surge troops, which president obama sent in the first year of his presidency, they are now on their way out, but the number of casualties continues to rise. the consequences will be the same when we pull out the troops last week, as i would have preferred, or at the end of 2014. unfortunately, there will almost certainly be a violent struggle for power in afghanistan, very much like what happened after a foreign occupation ended. in that case, when the soviet union pulled out, there was a six-year civil war until the taliban eventually won the war with the support of the population because they promised to bring an end to the war. when will this mean politically? we do not know. the fact that the u.s. says they are not prepared to go for an efforts to bring the taliban into peace talks, does not bode well for the possibility of the war ending sooner rather than later. what we know is that all wars, and as you said, the longest war in u.s. history -- every war and with some kind of negotiation, some kind of discussion, agreement. that can be now or at the end o

for the wealthiest americans which is what president obama wanted those families making more than $250,000 a year, individuals making more than $200,000 a year, what would the impact of that be? >> well, you know, that would hurt but that is something that the economy could digest because the -- total hit would be much smaller. of course, you are hitting higher income households who have other saving, other financial resources. they wouldn't pull back on their spending to the same degree. association you know, all else being equal it would be -- a negative to the economy in the very near term but it is something the economy could digest and -- ultimately longer run we need to address our fiscal situation. that is, we need government spending cuts and we need additional tax revenue. both of those things to address our fiscal problems. one way or the other we are going to need additional tax revenue and 2 most likely place to get additional tax revenue is from higher income households. >> $1.3 trillion deficit you definitely need something to bring that deficit down. bring the national debt down at

is that president obama and congressman ryan have almost the exact same proposal for the next ten years, save $1 trillion from medicare, not by cutting benefits or raising costs to elderly, but reducing payments to hospitals and other kind of providers. interestingly those two are in the same place on the next two years. romney for whatever set of reasons says he doesn't want to do anything in the next ten years, which means that $1 trillion that his vice presidential running mate would save he does not want to save. he's in a different place on the next ten years. so let's go to the period after that. what's the long-term plan that each of these guys has for cost containment. again, very interestingly, president obama congressman ryan want to achieve exactly the same level of medicare spending over the definite future. they want to increase by gdp plus 1.5%. they would get there different ways. president obama would get there by efficiencies, new methods. ryan would get there by having private competition. in terms of the actual dollars, it's the same. romney, again, we can ask why, does not wa
